On November 16, 2013 approximately 350 New Yorkers came to support and celebrate their local parks at the second annual Partnerships for Parks Conference. Held at New York University School of Law, current park group leaders had the chance to network, meet experts, and learn tips they can use immediately to support their efforts, while newcomers learned about the resources Partnerships for Parks has to offer to help them get involved with their community parks. The conference concluded with a reception and awards ceremony, where select groups from throughout the five boroughs were honored for their contributions to New York City’s green spaces. The Golden Trowel award was given out to recognize groups’ commitment to enacting change in neighborhood parks through superb community activism.

I attended the conference. I have been advocating for Marcus Garvey Park for about 1 year and recently joined the board of the Marcus Garvey Park Alliance. The conference gave me some insights and also confirmed some ideas that we have been discussing to build a community of stake holders and propel projects forward.
