TKA / Flaco Navaja and the Razor Blades / Tony Touch

TKA is a dance group that was prominent in the 1980s and early 1990s, primarily in Freestyle epicenters such as New York, Chicago, and Miami. The trio, hailing from New York City, were signed to Tommy Boy Records in the mid-80s, and released their debut album, Scars of Love, in 1987. The album spawned 6 Billboard Top Dance Hits and several pop hits. The success of the album spurred a mini Latin pop explosion as groups like Expose, The Cover Girls and Lisa Lisa stormed the pop charts. By the release of their second album Louder than Love, TKA was traveling the world opening for groups like Boys II Men, Donna Summer and Paula Abdul. Following pressure from their record label to shift their sound, the group split up, but reunited in 2001….

Felix Hernandez Rhythm Revue / screening: “Get On Up”

In 1983, Felix Hernandez began a two-year project traveling the U.S. collecting hundreds of hours of interviews with R&B artists. The material was used for a 13-part radio documentary called Harlem Hit Parade, which was syndicated to 70 NPR stations in the mid-80’s. In 1986, Felix introduced Rhythm Revue, New York’s first radio show devoted exclusively to classic soul and R&B. It premiered on WBGO and is now in its 29th year. …
