NYC Neighborhood - Red Hook, Brooklyn.
The 8.271 acres of Coffey Park, like nearby Coffey Street, were named for Michael J. Coffey (1839-1907), the former state senator, alderman, and district leader representing its community of Red Hook. Colonized by the Dutch in 1636, Red Hook, or “Roode Hoek” as it was once known, takes its name from the color of its soil and the shape of its shoreline.
The land amassing this park was acquired by NYC Dept of Parks & Recreation in three parcels over the period between 1892 and 1943.
A massive renovation of Coffey Park was completed in 1999. Coffey Park houses playgrounds, game tables, picnic areas, basketball & handball courts and an asphalt baseball diamond.
