Danni Gee, Dance Curator for City Parks Foundation, reflects on the recent loss of EJ Corrigan and Calvin Hunt.
In the past week, my Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater family, while on tour on the West coast, suffered the sudden loss of two incredible human beings, EJ Corrigan, Technical Director, and Calvin Hunt, Senior Director of Performance and Production. I met both of them when I joined the company in 1991. EJ was always good for a laugh, and Calvin, the gentle giant that he was, could be relied upon for comforting advice and solid guidance. They both excelled at their jobs and the company was always in good hands. They made sure all went smoothly, along with our late SummerStage Technical Director, Howard Thies, when the company first appeared at Central Park SummerStage in 1993, which was also my first experience with the festival, dancing on that stage under the stars. Seventeen years later, in 2010, with my dancing days behind me, I had the pleasure of bringing Ailey back to SummerStage as the Dance Curator of the festival. EJ and Calvin were right there, as always, guiding the company and making it easy for me in my new “role” to bring a company of this magnitude to our venue. There was laughter, and knowing tears as they recognized it was a “full-circle” moment for me. And now four years later, there are more tears. They both touched so many lives over the years all across the world. This is truly a huge loss, not just for the Ailey family, but for our entire artistic community.
