Do you want to make a difference in your community and support or care for a park near you? At Partnerships for Parks, we help people, organizations, and government work together to support NYC parks, gardens, trees, and other green spaces.

At this introductory workshop, learn how you and your neighbors can come together to support and improve your community green spaces!

Topics will include:

  • Why volunteers are so important for vibrant, thriving parks
  • Who you need to know in NYC Parks
  • How neighbors, coworkers, or community groups can spruce up a park with an “It’s My Park” project
  • Ways to join together with neighbors who also care about your park
  • Which resources are available to help you

Featured speakers include:

  • Elizabeth Walsack, Regional Manager for Central Brooklyn, NYC Parks

Elizabeth started with Parks in 2008 as Borough Commissioner Spiegel’s Correspondence Liaison. This position was interspersed with seasonal appointments supervising M&O crews at Douglass and Degraw Pool, on Coney Island Beach and Boardwalk, and in Prospect Park, before overseeing the borough’s Capital division beginning in 2012. She became a Park & Recreation Manager in 2014, supervising park operations in several communities throughout Brooklyn, and now works as the Regional Manager for Central Brooklyn.

  • Shah Tariq, Queens Outreach Coordinator, Partnerships for Parks

As an Outreach Coordinator in Queens, Shah acts as the first point of contact for park groups & volunteers in his district- helping them find the appropriate people and resources to transform their green spaces. He first got involved working with the community in Parks as a Challenge Course Facilitator at the Alley Pond Adventure Course, teaching people how to rock climb and overcome their fear of heights.

  • Leah Worrell, Technical Assistance Manager for Leadership & Group Development, Partnerships for Parks

Leah manages the Partnerships Academy training program at Partnerships for Parks which helps NYC community groups improve their skills in fundraising, social media, working with elected officials, increasing membership, and more. She is currently studying at the Marxe School of International and Public Affairs working towards a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Leah enjoys performing stand-up comedy and brings her humor and passion to her work helping community groups throughout the city.

  • Naomi Moriyama, Volunteer, Hellgate Hill Highgate Community Association

She is co-author of Secrets of the World’s Healthiest Children: Why Japanese Children Have the Longest, Healthiest Lives — And How Yours Can Too, a guide to helping children enjoy long and healthy lives.
