Former Gang Starr member and one of hip-hop’s most celebrated record producers
DJ Premier, aka Preemo, aka Christopher Edward Martin, has been melding fresh beats from the street with the vocals of the biggest and brightest names in hip-hop and beyond for quite a few decades. A fortuitous partnership forged in NYC in the late ‘80s between the Houston-born, raised-on-funk-&-soul deejay and the burgeoning troupe Gang Starr (with Keith “Guru” Elam at the helm) immediately yielded impressive results. Their first joint effort, 1989’s No More Mr. Nice Guy, proudly introduced the world to this ideally-matched union with the essential, flavorful jam “Premier & The Guru,” with Elam’s lyrical talents and Martin’s mix-&-scratch skills on full display. This perfectly synced crew would drop four undeniably solid albums over the next fifteen years. Still bubblin’, Premier has amassed three Grammys and continues to bolster positive, new voices in the hip-hop sphere today.
