NYC Parks welcomes you to participate in a unique and important volunteer opportunity in Rockaway!
NYC Parks in partnership with community, city, state and federal partners are working hard to rebuild and restore the boardwalk and beaches damaged by Sandy in Rockaway. To protect pedestrians and bicyclists on Shore Front Parkway during this time, barriers are being installed to separate walking and biking paths from vehicular traffic.
Through an artist competition and community vote, designs by Jade Chan, John Garcia and Patty Harris were chosen to turn the surface of these ordinary barriers into art. NYC Parks is now partnering with local civic organizations, the Department of Transportation (DOT), the Community Affairs Unit (CAU) of the New York City Office of the Mayor, NYC Service, City Parks Foundation and New York Cares on an initiative to paint these barriers, and we need YOUR help!
The project will kick-off with community volunteer days on Saturday, July 20, weather and other conditions permitting. No experience necessary, just a willingness to volunteer to help beautify this new local feature. For more information about this project and the murals, please visit NYC Parks.
